The Veleveteen Rabbit was written and directed by Katie Mangett. Music and lyrics by John Paul Sharp. The show was produced by the Curtains Up Theatre Company in Wheatridge, Colorado. Working with and for children was a new experience for me and I became so much better for it! We were able to sell out over ten performances.
LYRICS:
Rabbit: (spoken) What is REAL? Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle?"
Skinhorse:
It’s not how you’re made, it’s more a thing that happens to you
When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just for play but really loves you,
Then, you become real.
Rabbit: (spoken) Does it hurt?
Skinhorse: (spoken) sometimes,
(sung) but when you are real, you don’t mind
Rabbit: (spoken) Does it happen all at once, or bit by bit?
Skinhorse: It takes a long, long time. That’s why you better hope you’re sturdy
‘cause you need to last a long, long while!
and lose the sharp edges,
you have to be careful.
You’ll love your hair off, drop your eyes out, lose your joints and get shabby,
but it don’t matter, ‘cause once you’re Real,
you can’t be ugly to those who understand …
Rabbit: (spoken) I suppose you’re real?
Skinhorse: (spoken) the Boy’s Uncle made me real
(sung) a great many years ago, a long time past
but once you are real, you can’t be unreal ever again
it lasts for always …
Skinhorse & Rabbit:
it lasts for always …
it lasts for always …
